There are moments in life that don’t feel like major turning points until you look back and realize they changed everything. For me, that moment started with a friend getting engaged, and eventually led me to becoming a wedding and portrait photographer serving Chicago, Northern Illinois, Milwaukee, Southern Wisconsin, and beyond.
The Moment Everything Shifted
Over Fourth of July weekend in 2015, a close friend of mine got engaged. It was one of those joyful, exciting moments that naturally makes you think about love, celebration, and the future. But for me, it sparked something deeper. At that time, I had already developed a strong interest in photography. Even in high school, I was drawn to it, took classes and was teaching myself the art of Photoshop. I loved the idea of capturing real moments and telling stories through images, and I had always dreamed of building a creative business of my own. Still, I hadn’t found the motivation to actually begin. That engagement changed everything. And yes, huge shoutout to Shannon and Michael, because they had no idea they were basically about to launch my entire photography career just by getting engaged and letting me tag along with a camera.

From Interest to Action
After my friend got engaged, I set a goal for myself: learn my camera and develop my photography skills in time to photograph their engagement session that fall. That timeline gave me direction, and for the first time, real momentum. I learned how to shoot in manual mode, studied lighting, practiced constantly, and slowly started to understand how to move beyond simply taking photos and into intentionally creating them. What started as curiosity quickly turned into commitment.
Finding My Niche as a Wedding and Portrait Photographer in the Northern Illinois Photography Scene
In the beginning, I explored many types of photography. I photographed different subjects, tried different styles, and experimented with what felt right. But over time, one thing became clear: I was most drawn to people and connection. The emotion between couples. The quiet in-between moments. The chaos, joy, and authenticity of real life unfolding in front of the camera. That’s when I naturally found my niche: wedding and portrait photography. As I began photographing more weddings, engagements, and families throughout Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin, I realized this was where I was meant to be. Weddings especially felt like the perfect blend of storytelling, emotion, and real-time moments that can never be recreated.

Why Wedding and Portrait Photography Matter to Me
Weddings in Chicago and Northern Illinois are unlike anything else. From intimate city ceremonies to large celebrations across suburbs and countryside venues, every wedding has its own rhythm, personality, and story. They are fast-moving, emotional, and full of once-in-a-lifetime moments, the kind of moments couples don’t always notice in real time but cherish forever. Portrait sessions, whether engagement photos, family sessions, or personalized lifestyle photo shoots, offer something just as meaningful: a chance to slow down. They allow people to reconnect, with themselves, with each other, and with the season of life they’re in. Whether I’m photographing a wedding in downtown Chicago, an engagement session in the North Shore, or a family session in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, the heart of my work stays the same: capturing real connection.
My Approach Today
As my work evolved into what is now Brilliant Bee Photography, my approach has stayed grounded in one core belief: connection over perfection. I don’t believe in stiff posing or forced moments. I believe in creating a calm, supportive environment where you can actually be present, so the real moments have space to unfold naturally. My job is to guide when needed, observe carefully, and document your story in a way that feels honest, emotional, and true to you.
Looking Back on How It Started
What started with a friend’s engagement in 2015 became the foundation of my career as a Chicago wedding photographer and Northern Illinois portrait photographer. That one moment led to learning, growing, experimenting, and eventually building a business centered around storytelling and connection. And every wedding, every engagement session, and every family I photograph brings me back to that original spark, the decision to just start. Not when everything was perfect. But when it finally mattered enough to begin.
